It turns out November's half marathon finished out the year for me...December was busy and I didn't run at all. In fact, it was just a few weeks ago that I unhooked my running shoes from the ruck I carabiner-ed them to after the half. And I did that because I was cleaning, not running.
It appears I need a race on the horizon if I'm going to be running at all, and while I'm mulling over another half in late March (because it would be nice to run one while NOT recovering from the flu and actually having eaten solid food the preceding week), March is absolutely too far away. So to make sure I actually put the running shoes on this month, I went perusing the internet for a January race to sign up for.
What I found was the most perfect way to kick off the year imaginable...a chocolate-themed race. No, not the half...I do have a tendency to sign up for things I'm not exactly ready for, but that's too much even for me. They offer a 5K and I am SO THERE. It couldn't have worked out better. My boyfriend will be out of town that weekend, so a women-only, chocolate-themed race fits the occasion perfectly...and since it's only a 5K, even if I don't wind up running at all before that weekend, I know I can roll out of bed and do 3 miles without training--I'll be slow, but I'm always slow, so that's no big deal.
So the 2013 running calendar has officially been created. I'm tempted to steal an idea from a friend and do at least one event every month of the year, but...Texas is hot in the summer so I don't necessarily want to commit myself to races in July and August. We'll see what happens. But the important thing is, my 10+ lbs of Christmas vacation eating will eventually come back off and I will eventually get back to work at running longer distances and getting faster.
In the meantime, maybe I should stop eating this butter toffee popcorn.
Maybe.
