I finally made it to the gym tonight...after not making it to the gym each week for 2+ months.
Turns out that neglecting the gym for 2+ months is not the best strategy for improving upper body strength. So much for every last bit of progress I made...I am right back at the weight level and rep amounts I started at. My first thought was that this does not bode well for the goruck challenge that is now less than one month away--but my second thought was wtf, I just ran SEVEN MILES over the weekend; I may not lead the team in strength (okay, I am almost guaranteed to be the team weakling) but I will have endurance for sure!
My third thought was I should probably get back to doing some pushups...but if I haven't been motivated to pull down on a friendly little bar and such twice a week, I probably will not be motivated to push my entire body weight up off the floor either.
However--at least my weak-again arms are attached to a well-mannered and not-gym-obnoxious person...unlike the guys hogging the arm curl machine when I walked in. They were on that thing the whole time I was at the gym, grunting like mating bulls, using so much force to pull ONE HUNDRED POUNDS with one arm that the whole machine was rocking up off the floor with each jerk. I can only guess that they were there to provide a PSA for What Not To Do At The Gym: Kids, remember, when you grunt like 1,000-lb farm animals, visibly check out every thinnish female that walks past you, and shout about your 80+ reps at 100 lbs per arm and how many sets you've done, well, that is not how you make new friends--that is called Being Obnoxious. And that's The More You Know. I guess the film crew was late...
So at this point it may be a lost cause, but I'm hoping tonight marks the beginning of my return to upper body gym workouts--because if several weeks at the gym gives me the ability to do even ONE more pushup than I can do currently, I have a feeling it will still be worth it. Because these pictures scare me.
